Piper’s Story of Finding Home….
One day last November my husband, who has a landscaping business, came home from working in a really nice part of Northeast Jackson. He told me he saw a stray dog that he could not get off his mind- she had a “look in her eye” that was different than other strays. He said he asked all around if she belonged to anyone with the famous reply of: “No, I have never seen that dog”. So, he sadly left her behind. He couldn’t sleep that night because of her so we ventured back to Northeast Jackson. We found her in the neighborhood crouched down and shaking in the woods. We tried to call her, feed her and give her water until we finally succeeded. She was in pitiful physical shape and surely did not trust humans. We knew there was no doubt based on her behavior to us that she and had certainly been abused and neglected. Our daughter named her Sweet Piper. The story gets really good now! We went out of town for Thanksgiving and hired a pet sitter. On Thanksgiving morning, we get a call from the pet sitter that we are the proud owner of four puppies. Shocked was not the word- our vet had not discovered this miracle! We decided to keep the puppies because we were all so attached. The puppies live happily at our farm where they play, swim and chase fireflies until the sun goes down. Sweet Piper has come a long way! She sleeps with us, plays like a normal dog and gives the best hugs and kisses, but most importantly, she loves harder than any stray we have ever rescued- it is just that “look in her eye” of pure gratitude. We like to say we rescued Piper, but Piper rescued us. She reminds us that life is a gift……
As Elizabeth Parker says in Paw Prints in the Sand “A dog is not a thing. A thing is replaceable. A dog is not. A thing is disposable. A dog is not. A thing doesn’t have a heart. A dog’s heart is bigger than any “thing” you can ever own.”
